Grevy's zebra drought emergency · 30 November 2022

Marwell Wildlife is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity. With conservation projects around the globe, we're working to save species like the snow leopard, Grevy's zebra and sand lizard. By supporting us, you're contributing to the survival and recovery of endangered wildlife.

Story

Northern Kenya’s Grevy's zebra populations are confronting one of Kenya’s worst droughts in history. Your help will make a difference to their resilience and survival.
Five rainy seasons have failed, and this is devastating an already degraded landscape.

In the worst drought-affected areas live half of Kenya’s iconic and endangered Grevy's zebra. More than 90% of Grevy’s zebras in the wild are found in Kenya, where only 2,800 remain. Years of collaborative conservation efforts have seen Kenya's population stabilize, and, in some areas, increase, but the ongoing drought has risked reversing these gains.

Since July 2021, Marwell Wildlife and Grevy's Zebra Trust teams have been working tirelessly to feed over 600 Grevy’s zebra daily with hay and nutritional supplements. With the below-average rainfall received so far, we expect this effort will continue through to April 2023.

The European zoos are raising money towards the cost of sustaining Grevy’s zebra through provision of supplementary hay for the next four months. We need your help to continue saving this population!

Your donation could buy:

€ 3.50 or £ 3 feeds 1 Grevy's zebra with hay for 1 day
€10 or £9 feeds 3 Grevy’s zebra with hay for 1 day
€25 or £22 funds a supplementary feeding team for 1 week
€50 or £44 buys 3kgs of vitamin and mineral supplements
€75 or £65 funds 100 km of Grevy’s zebra survey mileage
€100 or £87 can feed a herd of 30 Grevy’s zebra for 1 day
€125 or £110 funds veterinary intern support for one week

Thank you for your support to help this endangered population survive the drought and continue the positive trend of species recovery for Kenya’s national Grevy’s zebra population.

This is a short-term intervention; alongside the feeding effort, Grevy’s Zebra Trust has been working with its partners to scale rangelands restoration work led by the local communities as they prepare their land for regeneration once the drought breaks.
