My grandfather, Capt. Colin Thomson FRICS. MC, was a man of immense importance in my life and in the lives of many others. He fought in the second world war from Africa to Europe from 1939 to 1944 until he was injured in Normandy following the D-Day landings, where he was awarded the MC for his bravery. My grandfather suffered from Alzheimers and died on 11th December 2005 following fourteen years of deterioration to his great intelligence, natural charm and sharp dry wit.
In his memory I ran the New York Marathon last year, with the support of friends, family and colleagues, together we raised over £5,000 which was beyond my expectations.
In doing this and in speaking to various people, I have been amazed by how many families have in some way been affected by Dementia, reinforcing what an important charity the Alzheiemers Society is. In some ways we are investing in our own future as well as helping those currently ill and requiring care.
Therefore, it is even more important to keep the ball rolling and continue to help this charity with it’s research and care programmes.
It is for this reason that I am now running the London Marathon and I ask you to offer a donation to help the families of others affected by this horrific disease.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure.
It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alzheimer's Society will receive your money faster and,
if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in gift aid will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks for your support, it is greatly valued and much appreciated,
Thomas C Wilkinson
