Story

3 days, 3 nights, 5 mountains  ...

In June 2011 I took part in an extended version of the national 3 peaks challenge. A hill climb over 5 of the highest peaks in mainland UK starting with Ben Nevis, followed by Scafell Pike and Great Gable and finishing in Wales climbing Y Lliwedd and Snowdon. The aim of all this is to raise up to and higher than my £350 target for the Help for Heroes charity.

I started the challenge on the last Monday of June with the long coach trip up to Ben Nevis in Scotland where we beat the crowds by setting out early in the morning with our first ascent. Initially it was a bit of a shock when we couldn't even see the peak above us but we walked on over the changing terrain, even meeting a stretch of snow at one point. We reached our first peak at a time unknown to a university student like myself and didn't hang around long in the cold weather before heading back down. After a brief reward at the pub we were back down to the coach and soon off to the Lake District. We woke up to be greeted by great views and an abundance of mosquitoes, a quick bacon sandwich and we were on our way from the farms at the bottom, past the waterfalls and lakes up to the top of Scarfell Pike. On the way back down we took a slight detour to get to another peak, Lingmell, before heading back down to the bottom to brace ourselves for the long winding steps up Great Gables. On completing our two (and a bit) peaks on day two it was back down to the coach and on our way to Wales. On the final day, and typical of the area, we faced our first bit of rain. Our first challenge was a bit different to usual with a scramble up to the Y Lliwedd peak, known to us as Peak 4 due to linguistic issues, followed by a steep slope up to our final peak, Snowdon. There was a brief moment to enjoy the cafe in the tourist site at the top of the mountain, not allowing ourselves to consider the train back down, before we took a leisurely stroll down the miners’ path to our finish point.

It was a great three days, exhausting at times but always enjoyable, my team keeping me entertained throughout, and some of the best views on offer.
