At the end of May, me (Chris) Matt and Neil will by cycling the length of Britain from Lands end to John O’Groats, this will be over 10 days and be 1000 miles, with the equivalent climbing of Mount Everest... twice!!! We will be doing the ride with support, except for 3 days in Scotland where we will be going it alone, this section will be dangerous and challenging but filled with memories of my dad so Neil and Matt have agreed to do the route.
Matt and I have both lost parents to cancer and it’s only through support by true friends like Neil who are willing to go that extra mile (literally in Neil's case) that we get through the heart ache, our stories are below, please read and please give generously.
Chris’s story
Most people have been affected by cancer, and if you’ve been close to it you’ll know that any help to make it that little bit easier goes a long way.
Last year I lost my dad Monty to cancer, and In his final days and hours the Macmillan nurses were there to support him and my mum. One particular nurse Tom was so amazing and I will never forget his kindness and compassion, especially when he had to tell me that my dad had hours to live and that we should prepare to say goodbye. The support Macmillan give every single day is so amazing and it can’t be put into words how much it helps people at the hardest time in theirs life’s.
Matt’s story
My Mum unfortunately passed away to womb cancer in September 2014 after being diagnosed 10 months before. My Dad had been looking after her a long time before this period as she suffered quite badly with her health and he also had severe health issues and unfortunately passed away himself in July 2016.
My Mum and Dad were quite private people and didn’t opt for additional care such as McMillan. I really wished they had because it was an extremely difficult and upsetting time for them. I also found it very difficult as I had no brothers or sisters to console with or help me support them.
I am doing this tour for a great cause and also of course for the memory of my great Mum and Dad who would be undoubtedly trying to talk me out of such a challenging feat but hopefully they will be looking down and looking after me along the way.
Neil's Story
So for me, this journey started when my good buddy Treanor dude, who I’ve known since I was 11 years old, asked me if I would do the LEJOG bike ride with him. He described it as an ‘adventure’ and explained he was going to raise money for Macmillan in memory of his Dad. I then heard that Matt was also involved and keen to raise money in memory of both of his parents.
It made me realise that cancer really does affect us all. My family lost my Great Uncle Jack Flint, who sadly passed away in 2011. My wife lost her dad, Julius Judin in 2012 to pancreatic cancer and my Aunty Janet Toseland passed away in 2015 due to a very long and very tough battle with a brain tumour.
I can not think of a more worthy cause than Macmillan who do truly terrific work and to take on such a challenge with two of the greatest lads I know is an honour.
Plus they’re going to need my support as during the training rides it’s apparent that I’m the only one who can read a bloody map!!
