My 'Why'
On 2 January 2017, Mum passed away. For a number of years she'd been battling a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, called Benson's Syndrome. When Mum left us, she was only 53 and prior to developing this illness, I had no idea what Alzheimer's was, let alone that it was possible for people to experience it at such a young age. Watching someone you love slip away piece-by-piece, often left me feeling completely helpless and devastated.
I strongly believe that on the most-part, there is a lack of
knowledge and understanding of what Alzheimer's is, let alone what to expect. There's also a lack of support for loved ones and carers, despite the best efforts of charities like the Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer's Research UK.
I decided that I wanted to turn my loss into something positive and to raise awareness of this disease, both to honor Mum's memory and to acknowledge those living with this illness and the people in their lives who are caring for them.
To do this, I'm taking on the challenge of walking a total of 100km this summer. The first challenge is a 26km night walk, which will take me from Guildford to Dorking. Then on 21st July, I'll be taking on the Jurassic Coast Challenge and walking 58km in 24 hours with Alzheimer's Research UK and team Plodosaurus! My final challenge will be a 25km walk through London on the 8th September. That'll be a grand total of 109km and almost 68 miles!
The funds I raise will be used to fund a young person's project and I really hope that this will support the ongoing research and hopefully one day a cure for this devastating illness. I also hope that over the next year, my journey can act as a vehicle for raising awareness of Alzheimer's.
Please support me in reaching my fundraising target and if you can, please also share this page with everyone you know! #tellyourfriends.
