Inca Trail to Machu Picchu · 13 May 2012

We believe every moment matters so we go above and beyond to help our patients and their families make the most of every moment they have left. All our services are free of charge. We receive 33% of our funding from the NHS and rely on donations to raise the extra £13m we need each year.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In May 2013, I am doing a sponsored 10-day trek to Machu Picchu along with an amazing woman called Jackie Date.

My father, Ronald Franklin, tragically passed away when I was 12 years old. My father was ill for many years. Unfortunately his cancer was misdiagnosed. During an operation, it was discovered that he had advanced stomach cancer and there was nothing more that could be done. Just 6 months later, on Mother’s Day in March 1996, my father passed away at the age of 47.

In June of 2006, my sister Lemarie Franklin did the same trek in memory of our father. Lemarie was sponsored by a friend of mine, Matthew Atiko, he was just 25 years old at the time and unaware that he would face his own terrible battle against colon cancer just a few years later. Sadly last month, aged just 31, Matthew passed away in the care of Trinity Hospice. Please click here to read the touching story of how Trinity Hospice made Matt's dying wish to fly come true. What a truly amazing charity.

Anyone’s life can be affected by a terminal illness. None of us know what lies ahead of us in life. All we can hope for is if we do ever have to face a terminal illness in the future, we are given the type of compassionate support given by Trinity Hospice. Trinity’s patient and family services are free of charge but with just 36% of their income coming from the NHS, Trinity relies on the generosity of the local community, companies and individuals to raise £6million every year.

Jackie Date is Matthew Atiko's wonderful mother. This will not be a holiday for me, as I am absolutely petrified of heights and of flying. I will need to do months of training & fundraising before undertaking such a demanding physical challenge. The days on the challenge will be long, the facilities will be basic and the conditions tough.
