Story

Hi, my name is Vicky, I am a 43 year old mum to Ben and Lily and wife to Mark and I live in Wrexham.

In September 2021 I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour (Vestibular Schwannoma / AcousticNeuroma). My life changed dramatically the day I was diagnosed. I couldn't work, I couldn't drive, I couldn't even bend my head forward without being sick as my balance was affected. I was referred to The Royal Salford Hospital in Manchester for my care. The care I received from day one was outstanding.

After further scans and appointments, it was decided by the team of specialists that due to the size and position of the tumour I would need surgery to remove it. I was very scared as I was told although slim there were obviously lots of risks that came with this brain surgery - life changing, and life would be different however due to its size and position this was the best choice.

The day arrived 1st February 2022, surgery day. Although I had been reassured, I was full of concern and apprehension. I was in surgery for 11 hours, but luckily 99% of the tumour was successfully removed. The week after was a blur, but I was quickly talking and with help able to walk and was fortunately home within a week.

One of the life changing effects I was aware would happen would be complete hearing loss to my tumour side. This has taken some getting used to (and still is), however I feel extremely grateful this is the only life changing complication (I know there could have been more). I now wear cross aids for my deafness which help but it's nowhere like having my complete hearing! I am back in work doing the job I love in A&E Wrexham gradually building my hours as this recovery takes its time physically and mentally.

My husband Mark will be doing a 24 hour bike ride on 16th/17th June 2023 to support this charity so any sponsors / donations can be made here.

I am organising a charity auction night 1st July to raise as much funds for this charity to say a massive THANK YOU to the skull base  team at Salford and to raise awareness and funds for future research in to brain tumours.

Any help and donations will be very much appreciated
