Story
In 2019 I wanted to raise money to name a guide dog puppy after my very own guide dog Vince who totally changed my life the day he walked into it & I raised over £5000 by climbing Ben Nevis. This challenge took me & my support team 13 hours to complete. Now I'm back attempting to raise £2500 to name a guide dog puppy after my Grandad, who was in the Royal North Staffordshire Regiment, stationed at Whittington Barracks, Lichfield. In his service he received multiple injuries, one of them being multiple scars through being shot in the back, his main injury was One of his hands was damaged to the extent that the doctors wanted to remove it. But like the man I find myself being today , he insisted this was not going to happen. So the doctors had to put his hand inside his stomach and joined veins to his hand until his hand was well enough to be removed from his stomach and from what I'm led to believe this took over 12 months. I won't ever forget his hand being shaped a bit like he was holding onto a football constantly and having a big lump over the top of his hand, and I won't ever forget the stories of the shrapnel that came out of his body mostly around his face from the gunshot wounds.
Due to him not having much movement in his hand, he was discharged from overseas on medical reasons on The 11th of June 1944, sadly my Grandad would never tell the story of what happened as he refused to talk about the war at all.
My Grandad died on December 8th 1989 yet I've always looked up to him because of the man he was. A honest, strong, determined character who adored nothing but his family.
This is why I find myself doing something I don't believe has ever been attempted by someone blind before. I am attempting to do the Elie Chain Walk in Fife, which is 0.5 km long with eight different chains or should I say challenges. As you're holding onto a chain while walking across a cliff face.
Thanks again for reading my story and thanks to those who donate and share as it’s all massively appreciated.
