The Fan Dance · 1 July 2017
On Saturday 1st July I will attempt to be the first wheelchair user to
complete the infamous & grueling Fan Dance. To achieve this goal I
will be helped by some friends who have, in previous years, helped me to the summits of Helvellyn, Arthur's Seat, Snowdon & Ben Nevis. But this challenge is something else!
The Fan Dance is a 24km there-and-back-again trek over Pen Y Fan. Starting at the red phone box by Storey Arms, we will climb over Y Gyrn and Corn Du and then up to the peak of Pen Y Fan. Then we descend Jacob's Ladder and scramble around Cribyn before turning south and following the Roman road down towards Pentwyn reservoir. Then we turn around and go back the way we came. Up, up and then more up. Up over top of Jacob's Ladder to Pen Y Fan (again!) and on to the finish line. This route has long been a part of SAS and SBS selection and is considered the yardstick of a candidate's potential to perform well on Test Week, and ultimately pass the Special Forces selection programme. And we're going to attempt it with a wheelchair!
We will be using this excruciating endurance event to raise much needed funds for the Spinal Injuries unit at Rookwood hospital in Cardiff. This is the unit where I did my rehabilitation after I broke my neck 16 years ago. I will always be thankful for the outstanding treatment I had there and this is an opportunity to give something back to an amazing establishment & a team of dedicated & caring professionals who do so much with so little. So please, dig deep and help us to help them. Diolch.
