Story
I am a nurse raising money for Whittington Hospital Charitable Funds to improve the hospital experience for people living with Dementia.
Being in hospital can be a difficult and sometimes frightening experience for someone living with dementia. However, the environment of the hospital can be improved to become more dementia friendly.
One of the things we want to do is transform some wards' day rooms into somewhere where older people with dementia can relax, by having access to a quiet day environment with specialised meaningful activities which can help make the hospital experience less stressful.
There are multiple other environmental elements that are known to support, encourage and enable people with dementia in care settings, which we want to progressively improve at Whittington Hospital, such as improving signage, flooring, lighting and colour schemes.
Additional information about how we can apply the money to make a hospital more dementia friendly can be found at the Kings Fund website, about Enhancing the Healing Environment Programme: https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/projects/enhancing-healing-environment/ehe-in-dementia-care
