Story
I know you're already thinking, Zeena...Trek...Volcano?! What now?! Let me give you some context...
For those of you who know me, you'll know that Alzheimer's has impacted my family massively and in more recent times much closer to home than I ever expected.
Although often thought of as a disease of older people, around 4% of people with Alzheimer's are under 65.
In May 2016, my Dad who is just 54 became one of those 4% and was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's.
Over the last year we've seen how much Alzheimer's can impact not only the person diagnosed but the immediate members of the family and their lifestyle.
Alzheimer's is a disease that can't yet be cured and the knowledge and understanding around the disease is limited. I want to help change that.
Through the research Alzheimer's Research UK fund into the causes of Alzheimer’s, their scientists are building a detailed picture of what happens in the brain in the disease. This is essential for improving diagnosis and developing new treatments to stop it.
Alzheimer’s can only be defeated through research. Thanks to the generosity of the charities supporters, they continue to support scientists who will take us one step closer to a breakthrough.
And so... in order to help raise money for this incredible charity, I have decided to take on a challenge bigger than anything I've ever done before. In April 2018, I'm heading out to Guatemala to do the Guatemala Volcano Trek challenge – summiting five active volcanoes in seven days including Tajumulco – the highest peak in Central America at an incredible 4,220m. Crazy - I KNOW!
I would love your support - ultimately as awesome as I hope this experience will be, my main aim is to raise as much money as possible for Alzheimer's Research UK. As I go through all the training to get myself fit and ready for this over the winter, I'd dearly appreciate you donating to the cause; as little or large as you can and it could help make a world of difference to many families out there like mine.
