We safe and decent homes for families to build new lives, hopes and opportunities

Story

Thank you all for your amazing support. With your help we managed to build 4 houses for people who had been living in tin shacks for up to 17 years, but your money will buy another half again.

Despite the rain on a couple of days we pulled out all the stops and got four solid walls, a roof and all the internal walls in. We handed over the keys to the one I worked on to Thomisa, who lived in a shack about 5x5metres with her four brothers.

The look on her face was just amazing. She explained to me how when it rains that all her possessions get wet, the furniture, her clothes, everything. With no hot water and no inside loo rain is not good weather for shack living.

She managed to cook us all (15 of us) a home cooked meal each day with only a tiny 2 ring electric hob. The electric was fed from slightly improvised wires from a pole nearby and all looked a little dodgy to me.

She told me how much she's looking forward to being able to lock the door at night and not feel the wind whistling through.

Have no doubt what your money has done for Thomisa and her township. It's been a total privilidge to be part of this. Thanks again.

About the charity

We believe decent homes are the heartbeat of strong communities and so we also fight for land rights for women, upgrade urban slums and informal settlements, improve access to water and sanitation, and help communities become more resilient in the face of natural disasters.
