Story
Just a quick note to say many thanks to those of you who sponsored us for the 2014 Brighton football marathon!
Amazingly for a team of (mainly) 40+ year olds, there were no real injuries and we all made it through a gruelling but really fun day… At the end of 12 hours of near solid football, we came a very reputable 6th place out of a field of 24 teams - and there were some much younger, fitter and frankly better footballing teams playing – our ample experience mist of helped!
What's more thanks to all of you our team raised a massive total of just over £ 3.5 K. This put us second in the top fundraisers (the team that came top had a Rizzle Kicks player on their team who tweeted their fan base asking for donations so they had a pretty good advantage!)
Overall the Brighton event raised over 36k for Tackle Africa - I know this money will make a difference in helping the brilliant tackle Africa coaches support even more kids across Africa to better protect themselves from AIDS and address other health issues through enjoying football. So thanks again.
Gutted to not have been picked for the England World Cup squad for Brazil, we decide to sign up for the 12 hour football marathon on a pitch just off the A23 in Brighton instead….seeing how long the England team ended up spending in Brazil looks like it was the right decision!!
Team generation press in made up of Scrub, Sam Peter, Andreaus, Barry, John, James, Girma and George ….more on each of us below:
Scrub is the current holder of the Sussex County Cup Veterans cup and will tell anyone who is interested all about the recent goal he scored at the Amex stadium (photo attached)
Sam is the out and out striker (i.e. goalhanger) for the team. He’s a board member for Tackle Africa so really didn’t have any choice in taking part in this event…he’s hoping his hamstrings fair better this time round than last time…
Barry won the Sussex Sunday intermediate league in 1990 and perhaps even more impressively came third in the Sussex schools 100m Hurdles…
John spent his formulative football years operating on the blind side of Lord melbury the one eyed manager of Bristol North West. His career hit a dizzying high when he was the Sevenoaks district league top scorer in 2004 thanks mainly to his team attributing every goal scored to him. His inability to shoot, tackle and pass has enabled him to cement his place alongside the likes of Sam, Scrub, Pete in Wankdorff stadiums current push to be relegated three seasons on the trot.
Andreas is the team's most recent foreign signing from Denmark. He is long-time Brøndby fan and a former Champion of Jutland.
George is the young blood of our team. He is a past winner of the Brighton and Hove schools cross country. He also used to run for Sussex schools cross country team. Now George plays for a division 2 team from the Sussex Sunday leagues (Whom also have a good chance of winning it next season).
James Cappuccini...He's as strong as an espresso with a silky smooth finish. Cappuccini is never Latte for a game!
Peter Mason… With a career total of 4 own goals in 9,000 appearances, this not-really-a defender has made the false number 2 position a pivotal role in every every team he has played for. An incredibly loyal player, he has only played for five clubs, only leaving as the clubs folded and picked up by the famous Wankdorf on a free transfer Often described as a short-sighted but enthusiastic geriatric, his 40 years playing at half-pace prove that football is marathon, not a sprint and should be played over 12 hours not 90 minutes. Motto: It's the taking (a)part that counts.
Girma Tadele… Is our last minute recruit from West Africa…His agent has promised some Ethiopian flair and (much needed) stamina on the wing…
