The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.

Story

Give a Dog a Bone is a family run Second-Hand Furniture business with stores in North London and Hertfordshire.

Our locally bred organisation is fast expanding and
demand for our services is at a record high. We are canvassing the support of
the local authorities in order to help us grow and achieve our goal of becoming
a nationwide brand.

  • Secondhand Furniture Retail
    Outlets

It is firmly believed that our business model can
help financially regenerate the community and massively reduce waste at local
landfill sites and recycling centres.

We are currently achieving this by recycling large
items and offering for sale good quality, sustainable furniture at hugely
discounted prices.

The aim is to create a trusted and recognised brand
so people have an alternative to buying brand new expensive furniture from
major retailers.

Have a look at our “7 reasons why buying ‘Used’
is ALWAYS better than buying ‘New’!”

  • Community, Marketing &
    Advertising platform

Our social media site now has over 2000 followers
and reaches approx. 15,000 people every week. The difference with our business
is that we advertise new stock in ‘real time’ which allows consumers to view
the latest arrivals as soon they hit our shops.

Our site also provides an interactive platform for
the local community who can sell directly to each other and advertise their own
upcycled projects. We can provide delivery services of large items if
requested.

Many local residents are isolated due to their
circumstances. This could either be as a result of lack of finances,
disablement, age or social rejection.

We take immense pride our company ethos as being a
traditional community store. We enjoy providing our time to the public through
friendly and meaningful conversation whether in-store or online

  • Waste Removal & Rubbish
    Clearance

As a fully licensed waste carrier we can, at a
subsidised rate, dispose of large damaged items safely for householders that
are unable to access the free local waste sites such as Barrowell Green and
Turnford due to their restricting situations.

We are continuously seeking cost savings and new
ideas to generate revenue by way of alternative advertising mediums, rate
relief, subsidised waste centres, and available funding for growth and
expansion.

Proposals:

  • Barnet Council and Barnet Homes work in
partnership with the Barnet Furniture charity by passing on furniture that has
been left on the street-side or at the Council’s civic amenity and recycling
centres, which is of a sufficiently good quality to be re-used.

  • A referral to providing good quality
furniture and other household items at subsidized rates to Enfield &
Hertfordshire residents, council linked housing associations and other
    local-run homeless causes.

  • Rate relief .

  • Free usage of Local Waste Centre’s.

  • Community
    funding opportunities.

  • Other Monetary support schemes, grants,
trusts or donation of merchandise offered by EC or affiliates.

  • Access
to local volunteers (Our company has already successfully employed 2
    apprentices via EC).

Our business model offers valuable
benefits to the community in the following capacities.

  • By the relief, either generally or
    individually, of persons who are in need, hardship or distress;

  • The
protection and preservation of the environment
for the public benefit by: (a) The promotion of waste reduction, re-use, reclamation,
    recycling
, use of recycled products, (b) Partaking
in national and community schemes and projects for recycling and reusing
    materials, components and resources; and

  • The
advancement of education, vocational training or retraining and the provision
of work experience particularly among unemployed people or people with special
needs in order to enhance their prospects of employment, independence and
    quality of life.
