Story
In the Summer I am travelling to Helambu province in Nepal to be an English/Mathematics teacher at Lekharka School. I am doing this as part of a scheme called CU HELP a joint venture between HELP (Helambu Education and Livelihood Project) and Cambridge University. More information about CU Help can be found here http://www.helpnepal.co.uk/about-us/committee
More information about how CU Help has helped Lekharka school in the past and what it intends to do with future donations, is provided below.
Lekharka is a fairly recent addition to HELP’s partner schools, we been working with the school since 2013. The local community has remained very supportive of the ideas of improving educational quality. We believe that the support and encouragement of the community is vital for the sustainability and long-term development of the school.
So far, HELP/ Mondo has partnered with the school/ community in the following projects:
Construction of recently completed 4 new classrooms
Books for setting up a mini library
Sports equipment support soon after which the school participated in the Himalayan Olympics.
Classrooms management through supporting classroom furniture, white boards and Notice boards
Workshops and teachers training
Drinking water management
Compound fencing works which are underway
Future Needs
Teacher training
Library facility upgrading
Classroom management
Playground management
I will be out in Helambu for nearly 2 months. As part of our role as teachers, we will be teaching everyday of the school week to classes of over 30, joining in at playtime, making slight fools of ourselves perhaps, but most importantly hopefully leaving a lasting positive impression on the students and teachers.
