Story
Thank you for sponsoring me!
I'm cycling from London to Paris to raise money for the British Liver Trust. As you all know, in 2006 I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis ("AIH") a rare and aggresive illness that causes my immune system to actively attack my liver.
Like many liver illnesses, AIH is not caused by alcohol or drug abuse. So many people, like me, suffer from liver illnesses without ever having drunk heavily or taken drugs.
Back in 2006, cycling anywhere would have been impossible, as I was "as ill as you're ever going to be before you die" (in the words of my consultant!). I was treated in the end with daily medication. Untreated, my liver would have failed within six months.
2 1/2 years on I'm in remission, although constant blood tests are taking their toll on my veins! To get here, I've taken steroids, had two liver biopsies and a MRI scan, become best friends with my consultant and recovered from severe ME brought on by the physiological strain of the illness. The illness never goes away and the drugs cause cancer (more money for research please!!!!!) but for now I'm living a normal life!
So being in a position to cycle to Paris (300km in a weekend!) is a massive achievement and a large part of it is due to the research funded by the British Liver Trust. Liver disease is a hugely underfunded area of research despite being a massive killer so your support will make a real difference.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: British Liver Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Thank you!
