This page was originally set up for the Alzheimer's Memory walk in memory of my mother (story below). We have adapted it now to cover any fundraising event we are involved in.

My Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago. Like a lot of people, we had heard so much about the disease but did not appreciate the impact on the individual and the family.
In the early stages, it was just like forgetfulness, just like we all have, you know, that moment you go to do something and then wonder what it was you were going to do.
As time went on things got worse, my father cared for mum and the family gave all the support we could muster.
Not wishing to go into too much detail, but on Xmas night 2013, mum got out of the house and had a fall. She ended up in hospital for 6 weeks and then went into Horncastle Care Home which is situated in Ashdown Forest. This was going to be her home from then on. The caring mum received from all at the nursing home was just superb. A real loving bond was made between them, which is incredible as mum had not only lost the ability to walk but could no longer speak - you could tell what she wanted to say just by looking into her eyes.
Ironic, as mum used to be a teacher.

We remember a nurse describing how this disease effects/affects the whole family, to the extent of possibly destroying family bonds:
"It is like an Octopus, which gets hold of one person and with the other tentacles it will drag the rest of the family into its clutches"
Our family bond has remained intact and the memory of mum lives on.

We knew we wanted/needed to do something for the charity and especially for the memory of mum, who was also my best friend and I am honored and blessed to have 2 people in 1.
Signing up to the Leeds Castle 10km memory walk will be the first of many events we enter.
