Fundraising for Valleys Kids
Story
Help Howell raise money for Valleys Kids & Amamponda for their work with the children of Langa Township in Cape Town.
Dr Howell Edwards is one of the founder members of Valleys Kids and has been chair of the Board of Trustees for the past 30 years. Now in semi-retirement he has decided to run his first marathon as a way of raising funding for this project.
Valleys Kids' Langa Link
Valleys Kids (www.valleyskids.org) are a local Welsh charity with a 30 year record of changing lives and transforming communities. They are committed to helping people to help themselves to improve their lives. Each year they support thousands of children and families from the South Wales Valleys. Valleys Kids is seeking funding to work in partnership with Amampondo, to support disadvantaged children and families in Langa by developing a long term link with the local community to help them to improve their quality of life.
Amampondo is a South African percussion ensemble which started as a group of buskers on the streets Cape Town in 1978. They have recorded many and in 1988 they were asked to play at Nelson Mandela's seventieth birthday concert at Wembley. Valleys Kids have worked with Amampondo since 2004 on several projects including a performance in front of Prince Williams.
Langa Township established in 1927 is one of the oldest Townships in Cape Town. It has a population of over 250,000, and though improvements are being made suffers from widespread poverty and deprivation, and offers limited opportunities for children and young people. Howell will be running the Cheverney Marathon in the Loire Valley on the 5th April 2009 to raise crucial funding to support this link.
