"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - Nelson Mandela
Hi everyone! My name is Ifé and this summer I will be teaching Maths to students in Alexandra, Johannesburg (South Africa) as part of the Warwick in Africa Programme!
What is Warwick in Africa?
Warwick in Africa is a programme which aims to improve education in some of Africa's poorest schools, working across Tanzania, Ghana & South Africa. Every summer since 2006, Warwick in Africa has sent a team of student volunteers to teach in these schools.Warwick in Africa has also expanded to run teacher workshops, working closely with teachers from these areas to transform student performance and experiences!
Why am I taking part?
When I look back at my school experience, it was the teachers who believed in me and in what they were doing that made an impact. Therefore, I want to pay this forward by inspiring hope and motivation in areas where this might be low. I want to share my love of Maths and change the perception of Maths being IMPOSSIBLE to it being, not only ACHIEVABLE, but ENJOYABLE. I especially want to inspire the girls in the schools, who may see Maths as a "boys only" subject, that it is most definitely universal and that #THISGIRLCAN
Secondly, I have a personal connection to Africa. My family originates from Nigeria and, as well as London, I consider it home. I feel a duty to exchange the knowledge which I have acquired with my students and use what I know to help in any way that I can. However, I also want to learn from my students, about their experiences and a different African culture that I am yet to discover. Africa is an incredibly diverse continent and I believe that going to individual countries and areas to meet and learn about the people, is how we can deliver unique solutions and create unique experiences which is incredibly important for development.
Please help me raise £1000 to support my journey and keep Warwick in Africa running for many years!!
