About Ivana Kupala: Ivana Kupala is an ancient Ukrainian tradition marking the summer solstice. It is a night of mysticism, romance and magic, full of rich symbolism - including fire burning, fortune-telling, flower twinning, night bathing and fertility. On this night, a woman adorned her head with a freshly-cut floral wreath and sent it flowing down the river. Her romantic fate was played out according to which male picked up her crown. Couples leapt over 'Kupala bonfires,' performed ritual dances, and bathed themselves in the river as an act of purification.
