Story

Kate Brackley - Making A Difference Charity Ball Saturday 12th June 2010 De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton

 Kate Brackley

Kate is mother to three children Carrie (6), Billy (4) and Tasha (2). In August 2008, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. From what was thought to be a routine doctor’s appointment, Kate underwent a biopsy by herself. A mammograph the following week confirmed the existence of not one, but three small tumours in her left breast. Fortunately, the diagnosis was incredibly early and the tumours, whilst very small, were indeed aggressive growing cancer cells.

The rollercoaster experience of doctors scans, surgeons and plastic surgeons came to a very quick head on September 15th 2008 with a mastectomy operation, successfully carried out at the Nuffield Hospital in Southampton. Whilst the surgeon’s words ‘you are cured’ ring loud to this day, cancer is a constant companion that will make every illness that much more worrying.

The inevitable course of chemotherapy started in October 2008 and came to an end in January of 2009. Herceptin dosages continue and the life of popping tablets on a regular basis is a way of life. The reconstruction is taking place in March 2010 and the 8-12 hour operation will provide a whole new chest with a tummy tuck!

Whilst the whole process is a horrible, horrible experience, all sufferers end up stronger individuals. It provides a bond with many, others who can appreciate what you have gone through. A chance meeting of head scarf wearers in a queue at Mickey Mouse’s house in Florida or meeting inspirational people like Annabel and Nigel Stewart, there are positives to be taken out of even the worst situations.

Having received so much help, care, support and assistance from family, friends old and new, and professionals dealing with her cancer, Kate and husband Malcolm are determined to give something back.

Kate’s idea of a charity ball is reaching fruition. With Annabel and Nigel who have been through teh same process and much worse with the loss of Ryan and Olivia at 34 and 21 weeks we are determined to raise as much money as possible for charities. It is a chance to say thank you by raising as much money as they can for very worthy causes - The Wessex Cancer Trust, SANDS (Stillborn and Neonatal Death Chaity) and Women for Women. They are determined that they can, and will, Make A Difference.

The Charity Ball is the way lots of people can support us and for us all to have a fantastically enjoyable evening. We have been asked by lots of people how they can help us Make A Difference. People have been very generous with gifts of prizes that we can auction on the night, or prizes for the raffle. We have also had good responses from businesses who have provided adverts for our Charity Ball Programme. If you can help please come forward and let us know. Alternativley we have set up this page to allow people to donate money to these fabulous causes. We shall distribute funds between the charities from the total source of income. We thank you for your help and support.  Please look at our Website, Makeadifferenceball.org
