Story
I have always wanted to take part in volunteer work in another country where I can be involved in giving something back to the local community. My work are giving me a fabulous opportunity by partnering with Marie Curie to send a group of 20 trekkers to the beautiful Rift Valley in Kenya where we will trek across varied and amazing terrain and work hand in hand with the local tribesmen to work on maintenance projects for their school. Many schools in Kenya lack even the most basic amenities such as walls, classrooms, desks, blackboards, kitchens and toilets and we will performing a variety of tasks such as building benches and desks or fitting water-tanks and gutters to catch rainwater in the dry season (bringing my well known DIY and hard labour skills to bear!). It is a 12 day trip and will involve 6 days of trekking and 5 days working with the local community on projects for their local school.
These projects greatly enhance the standard of living for the local Maasai people and linking a number of these types of projects offers sustainable development to the area and means that the local people can work to continue the development after the volunteers have left.
On top of this, the money that I raise at home will help Marie Curie Cancer Care deliver more choice and care to terminally ill people, giving them the choice of dying at home with their families or within Marie Curie hospices, actively promoting their quality of life and providing support for their families.
So please, dig deep and give generously to this truly worthwhile and important cause. I really appreciate any contribution you can make.
