I am one of a team of Fire Service personnel across the UK travelling to Uganda in February next year to teach the children of Mityana about Fire Safety. The use of naked flames for both light and cooking purposes is a way of life in much of Uganda and this leads to a higher instance of fire-related deaths and injuries.
The Ugandan people are not lucky enough to have community fire safety teams to travel to the schools and businesses advising and educating about the importance of fire safety, as we do here in the UK. We are hoping to provide this service for people in the Mityana district of Uganda, visiting 6,000 children and their teachers to demonstrate what to do in the event of a fire and how we can all prevent fires occurring.
Many children in Mityana sleep in school dormitories where naked flames are used for light around flammable bedding and mosquito netting. There are high instances of death in these surroundings and there are no smoke alarms to give the children and early warning and no fire extinguishers to help fight the flames.
The money raised for this project will go towards making this whole trip possible from interpreters and transport in Uganda to teaching aids and smoke alarms for the schools.
I am currently arranging a trek via the Trans Pennine Trail from Leeds to Sheffield to raise money for the Foundation.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Mityana Community Foundation will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your support.
