Story

Welcome,

May 19th 2010 will see the beginning of a 1000 mile cycle journey from Lands End to John O'Groats. This will be undertaken over the following 8-10 sunny days by myself, Paul King, & Chris Hall.

My father has had glaucoma since the early 80's and has had an operation to prevent it getting any worse. Unfortunately before the glaucoma was diagnosed he had lost a large portion of his peripheral vision in both eyes. He currently has to take two types of drops everyday to release pressure build up in the eyes to prevent the vision from worsening.

As i have grown up with my fathers lack of vision, i know how difficult it is living with glaucoma and i want to help provide funding for glaucoma research for future sufferers.

Please sponsor us as much as you can afford, and where possible please come and cheer us on - we will put our route online before the event starts.

Thanks,

Paul King

12may 2010 Update

Only 7 days to go and training has gone well. We've cycled in every weather imaginable from snow to sunshine, from -4c to 20c and i must say i've enjoyed some of it. Currently cycling about 100+ miles a week mainly after work with a big one at the weekend, all carrying the 10kg of kit needed for the trip. Felt a bit of a fool carrying iron weights in my panniers but it definatly helped.

3 weeks ago saw the big test, 100mile trip to Bala in wales, camp then 100miles back. The pubs were very nice when we arrived so had to check them out. The ride went better than expected and we made a mental note to wear suncream and insect repellant.

Unfortunately there has been a slight setback for Chris as he contracted bronchitis after the bala trip,we are currently wishing for a speedy recovery in time for the ride.

Basic route is as follows after a flight to exeter, train to penzance and ride to lands end; LANDS END - NEWQUAY - TAUNTON - HEREFORD - MACCLESFIELD - SWALEDALE - HAWICK - PERTH - INVERNESS - JOHN O'GROATS We will be looking to do 100miles a day, weather and illness permitting with some possibly longer days to 'bank' the miles.

We are currently collecting money in various ways in our home town of Chapel-en-le-Frith. There are money boxes in Fletchers the butchers and Chapel Tool Hire (and my mum is walking around with one). We will also be carying money boxes on our bikes so if you happen to see us please stop us,we wont bite. Chris will also be doing an interview on High Peak Radio Friday 14th to spread the word so tune in and have a laugh at him.

17th May

Almost packed the largest, heaviest bags that can be taken. I'm sure after the first day most of it will be either sent home or put in the bin.  Manchester airport was closed yesterday by some cigarette ash in the sky so are hoping, fingers crossed, that the flights are running to scedule. No training for the last few day either, just eating as much as possible.
