We grant wishes for seriously ill children to give them magical memories

Story

In February 2003 Lucy was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (all) at the age of two. She had two and a half years of chemotherapy and despite many illnesses’s and scares throughout at the end she was in remission. Lucy started school at five a healthy girl. Lucy was in remission for nearly three years when in February 2008 the leukemia returned. Lucy was very poorly when she was readmitted toGreatOrmondStreetHospital. She underwent thirteen weeks of intensive and aggressive chemotherapy. It was decided the best outcome for Lucy was to have a bone-marrow transplant, luckily her oldest sisterCharlottewas a 100% match.

In June 2008 Lucy and her mum were allowed home for three weeks rest before the transplant. Luckily Rays of Sunshine had granted Lucy a wish, ray of Sunshine sent Lucy, mum, dad, and sisters Bonnie and Charlotte toLongleatSafari Parkfor two nights and three days. Rays of Sunshine were brilliant, they organised everything we strayed in a beautiful hotel with all meals and drinks included, and Rays of Sunshine even provided money for ice-creams, petrol and gifts. We had a truly fantastic and memorable time. Rays of Sunshine also gave us tickets to see High School Musical at the Theatre, Lucy had a magical evening.

In July 2008 Lucy successfully received Charlotte’s bone marrow and now Lucy is well on the way to recovery. There are long term and lifetime repercussions from having radiotherapy and bone-marrow transplant. Lucy is on medication for life and is infertile but her sister Bonnie has vowed to give Lucy her eggs or have a baby for a baby for her in the future.

The past five years have been very stressful for Lucy and her family and throughout everything having Rays of Sunshine grant Lucy’s her wish meant so much. It gave Lucy, her sisters and parents something special to cherish and remember. Thank you to rays of Sunshine, also a great big thank you to Danny for doing this walk. Please support Danny, we think what he is doing is selfless and brilliant. The efforts of Danny and others like him give Children and there family’s happiness in what is mostly a very difficult and dark time.

We brighten the lives of seriously ill young people by granting wishes and providing ongoing support. Our wishes are as unique as the children themselves and whether a child wants to be a fireman, meet a real-life mermaid or even the Loch Ness Monster, we work hard to make that wish come true.
