Story
Cycle For Sight was the brainchild of a group of three former students, Fares Hatoum, Jessica MacIsaac and Abubakr Patel, from the University of Bradford. In 2011 the trio hit upon the idea of a cycling challenge when they decided they wanted to do something different and fun to mark October’s annual World Sight Day Challenge and raise funds on behalf of Optometry Giving Sight.
The aim of the charity is to first and foremost help achieve the mission to eliminate avoidable blindness due to uncorrected refractive error – the simple need for an eye examination and spectacles.
The donation income from the challenge so far has funded projects which help train local people, establish vision centres and provide the provision of eye care in the developing world. In addition, the success of this initiative also contributed to the funding for Vision Care for Homeless People’s new vision centre in Manchester for the next three years.
