Happy New Year everyone.

 

Firstly I hope you all had a great night and are looking forward to 2011. Personally I could not have asked for more: great food, great location (London) and being around loved ones. I am fortunate enough to say that I am in an environment that gives me the opportunity to aspire to do anything.

 

This, however, is not the case for much of the worlds population, with many people hoping that they can get through the next day let alone the next year. 

 

Reading stories of great titans who have pledged to do their part for good causes, to name a few that stood out to me: Eddie Izzards Marathon a day for 51 days, Toby Ord the Oxford University academic giving away £1 million over his lifetime to charities, and the wealthiest billionaires continuing their pledge to give the majority of their wealth away during their lifetime or after their death. I felt that I too must do something.

 

With that in mind, I Make The Pledge that the next time I go to buy a luxury item that I do not need, I will instead donate that money to charity.

 

If over the course of 2011 we all did this just a few times...how much money could we raise to make the world a better place?

 

A small sacrifice from us could potentially do a lot of good to help those that cannot help themselves. So let us all Make The Pledge and no matter how small or large, let's donate and see how much money we can raise over the next 365 days.

 

The charity I have chosen for this endeavour is Unicef. The charity is dedicated to improving the lives of children across the world. Helping to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path.

 

If we all work together we can advance the cause of humanity inch by inch.
