2009 was the most painful year our family had ever experienced. In February Martin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, then 9 months later he lost his battle. We never thought something so horrific would happen to us. He was admitted into Marie Curie hospice on numerous occasions as his illness was so severe. Not only did the nurses give him the most amazing care and make his last few months more comfortable but they also gave us as a family such fantastic and supportive palliative care.
Martin’s illness was misdiagnosed as a mental health issue, then when we found out he had a carcinoid tumour that was terminal. We expected to have at least a few years with him, but unfortunately the cancer was too aggressive and it rapidly drained every last bit of life out of him. He fought so hard, he was so brave and never complained. His strength and determination will live on in us for the rest of our lives!
Cancer affects so many of us and a cure isn’t always an option, as this was the case for Martin. That is why it is so important to support Marie Curie Cancer Care. They provide such heavenly care for the patient and make everyday they live to see the best it can be!
