Story

Written by Ruth Armstrong:

I was with our dear friend Melanie when she got the news about her terminal cancer condition at the hospital. I was the one crying, not Melanie. She accepted the situation with grace and fortitude and a determination to make the most of whatever time was left to her. I remember her saying shortly afterwards " well, I'll just have to find the fun in cancer then". Amazingly, and to her absolute credit, she did.
For many cancer patients, life becomes an exhausting chain of hospital visits, drugs and worry. Melanie endured all this with equanimity and an incredibly positive attitude. Hospital or home visits to her were often great fun and she had so many well wishers and friends that a doodle poll for visiting had to be set up to accommodate everyone!
Her sense of humour never failed her and we shared much more laughter than tears in her remaining time. Melanie was a very creative person and a brilliant actress. She put these talents to good use when she had her first hair loss from Chemo therapy for example by making a video of herself as Yule Brynner and Anna from 'The King and I' - one her all time favourite musicals! and playing Queen Elizabeth in a scene where she reveals her baldness to her Lady in waiting and then gives a stirring speech about her strong spirit. Both brilliant, both funny, very 'Melanie'. Yes, such was her influence that she became a style in her own circle of friends.
But one of her most endearing characteristics was her generosity and kindness towards others. She gave her heart and her intelligence to people and causes and she gave her wealth away to others so that they could enjoy it too. She gave , as the German's say, 'with a warm hand' and with a twinkle in her eye, becoming for us, a real life fairy godmother -we kindly ask you to consider doing the same.

We, her friends, are Melanie's Angels, we want to try and help grant some wishes to make children's dreams come true - wouldn't you like to join us?! Please donate whatever you can, any donation will make a difference.

Thank you.
