Story
Hi, thanks for taking the time to read my page!
As a criminology/humanitarian studies student I have spent time exploring and researching the issue of human trafficking .. Initially I was shocked by the discovery that slavery continues today, in the midst of our "modern" society. Up to 800, 000 people are trafficked across borders annually - 80% of which are women & 50% are minors. (US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report 2008 ) Individuals are trafficked into situations of abuse and exploitation, such as hazardous labour, sexual exploitation, forced domestic servitude, begging and criminal activities. (UNICEF Innocent Insight 2008) This year I got tired of asking myself the question “what could I possibly do”? I decided to get involved. It was at this point that I discovered the world of charity challenges!!
This challenge involves a 250km husky mushing expedition through arctic Norway and Sweden. It involves mushing individual dog teams up to 60 km a day, in temperatures down to -20 degrees, sleeping in a tent (not the average Aussie style), and no contact with civilisation or her creature comforts! I’m sure I am going to ask myself “what I was thinking” on more than one occasion....!
My goal is to raise awareness of human trafficking, and to encourage people to get involved in whatever capacity they can.. This expedition was the most outrageous charity challenge I could find.. I figured if anything is going to get people’s attention an Aussie going to the arctic will probably do the trick!!
