Story
Hi there, I am on a mission to raise money for ASTI in Uganda where there is a pressing need for a rehabilitation centre to support victims of acid attacks. It's quite shocking what some people can do to others - the suffering can be intense, it often will last a lifetime. The photo, taken on my visit in November 2008, shows what happened to Zulaika when she was attacked. The intended victim of the revenge attack was her husband but the perpetrator needed to get rid of the acid so threw it a Zulaika. She has recently had to return to hospital for further skin grafts. While in Kampala neither she nor her mother are working so the family suffers financially. Muhammed works at ASFU as a tailor making pressure garments but it took him all his savings and four years to get justice. Muhammed suffered physical pain and stigma from local people, former friends and family. ASFU was not around at the time so he really appreciates what help is now provided by ASFU. The rehabilitation centre will provide more sustainable help for help more survivors.
Helen Matthew and I raised money in 2008 running in various 10K and half marathons; I am running again in 2009 so please give your support. for the Edinburgh, Leeds and Manchester 10K in May and June. I have survived the challenges of the Edinburgh run as seen on Channel 5 TV, next is Manchester on 17th May, following in Gabriel Haile Selassie's wake with 30,000 others.
