Update 2/6/2009

Mission accomplished!

The toughest thing I have ever done!  Hot Hot Hot - far too warm for running a marathon and not helped by the thieves who stole several pallets of water and energy drinks in the early hours before the race started leaving many drink stations without water.  I was on course for a good time but the heat and lack of water got to me between 16 and 22 miles.  Got going again after refuelling on water and jelly babies managing to drag myself over the finish line in 3hrs 48 mins.

Fundraising update 23/5/09

Supermarket collection raised £101 and a few pence!

Fundraising update 20/5/09

With less than 2 weeks to go I need a big push to hit my target - I am planning to do a collection outside Somerfield Supermarket in Kenilworth on Saturday 23rd May and I'm hoping that Stoneleigh Village Club will run a guess my finishing time sweep - so fingers crossed for a strong finish.

Training update 20/5/09

Less than 2 weeks to go so nerves are starting to jangle!

Training is going well, I have completed my preparation races finishing the Regency 10k in 42m 55secs and Stratford Half Marathon in 1 hr 36 mins.  By the time I get to the start line I will have covered over 700 miles in training (over 100 hours) and will be on my 3rd pair of training shoes!

Training update 21/3/09 - The purple bit!

I am halfway through my training now with 11 weeks gone and 11 to go, I have ran just over 250 miles and plan to run another 350-400 before the big day. I have managed to shift just over a stone since Christmas (half of the weight I had put on in 2008!) which is helping no end.

A couple of weeks ago I completed the Friends of Mick 'n' Phil Draycote Half Marathon.  I finished in 1hr 39'  and came 44th (small field - obviously!).  It was very cold and windy and although I was pleased with how I got on it served as a stark reminder as to how much I need to improve to cope with the full marathon distance.

I am just coming into the most challenging phase of the training with long runs increasing to 20 - 22 miles.  I just hope I can keep injuries at bay and reach the start line as well prepared as possible.

I am planning to run the Regency 10k 5th April and the Stratford Half Marathon 26th April.  I will update my page with how I get on.

Original text

As some of you may know, I am not new to running.  2008 was however a very lazy year for me, I spent more time in the pub than the gym.  By the end of the year I had put on 2 stone and was struggling to run around the block.  Running the Edinburgh Marathon at the end of May is therefore going to be a massive challenge.

I do however have a very personal reason for putting myself through months of getting up at the crack of dawn for pre-work frosty runs and late evening runs in the dark.

After recovering from breast cancer twice and being clear for 7 years, my wife's mum Jo was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer.  We are not sure what the future holds and how the cancer will develop, but we know that when the going gets tough we will be able to rely on Macmillan Cancer Support to be there for us.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Macmillan Cancer Support gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me.
