Story

This is Nyla Grace Brannan, My beautiful 2 year old Niece.

She has recently been diagnosed with a rare type of tumour called an Optic Pathway Glioma. An Optic Pathway Glioma is one of several different types of brain tumour that affect children. These are caused by cells growing & multiplying in an uncontrolled way to form an abnormal lump.

This tumour develops in areas of the brain that transmit visual information from the eyes to the brain. The vast majority of Optic Pathway Gliomas are benign but still cause serious symptoms such as visual imparement and blindness.

Nylas parents, Lorraine & Ashley, noticed Nylas left eye constantly wobbling whilst recently on a family holiday. They took her to see her G.P. who immediately referred her to an eye specialist. Here, she was diagnosed with Nystagmus(an involuntary eye movement) and was told she had severely reduced vision in her left eye.

Lorraine & Ash weren't covinced that something more serious was behind the problem so persisted with appointments to the specialist and sent her for an MRI scan. Only then did they find a large Tumour growing in her Optic Pathway which was forcing her eye forwards.

Nyla has since undergone surgery to insert a tube so she can recieve Chemotherapy for the next 18 months. As you can imagine this will be a gruelling time for all concerned, none more than Nyla herself. I have set up this page to try raise money for Nyla & Macmillan Support, which the family have been receiving and to make Nylas Life as easy as possible through this tough, tough time and also to raise awareness of this condition.

Overall Brain Tumours are the 2nd most common tumour after Leukaemia. They affect 1 in 30,000 children each year. This is a lot less frequent than many other childhood illnesses. Brain Tumours affect a child's Long-Term health and well being more than any other type of tumour. About 20% of Brain Tumours are Optic Pathway Gliomas.

Myself, Mark Adams & Daniel Berrell along with others are cycling from Liverpool to Leeds along the Leeds/Liverpool canal towpath(127.25 miles) in order to raise money & awareness for this rare condition.

The Charities we are supporting are MacMillan Support & Candlelighters.
