We are two doctors from Broomfield Hospital A&E – Consultant, and Trauma Lead, Dr Hieatt and Acute Care trainee, Dr Wren. We’re here to raise £4,180 for the “Wolverson Trauma Transfer System” (or trauma board) for people who come to A&E following major trauma.

A BIT OF BACKGROUND

It’s really important to keep trauma patients still, so any unstable injuries (i.e. fractures or internal organ damage) are not worsened, as this could have life changing and life-threatening consequences. However, trauma patients still have to be moved, for example, moving from the A&E trolley to the CT scanner table, or holding the patient on their side if they’re vomiting. At the moment, this takes a lot of man power (at least 5 people!!) and careful coordination in order to keep the person as still as possible (also known as “log rolling”).

This is where the Wolverson Trauma Transfer System comes in. It is a carbon fibre, light-weight board that trauma patients are secured onto with multiple belts, and stay on until safe or necessary to move them off. The most desired part of this system is it makes difficult moves safer, quicker and more comfortable for the patient, and with less staff.

Instead of sliding the patient on a “slide sheet” across a plastic board, from trolley to table, risking patient movement, the Transfer System is simply lifted. And, instead of multiple people log rolling a patient onto
their side, the trauma board can simply be tilted by two people, by lifting the boards handles.

Its radiolucent, meaning it doesn’t show up on CT scan pictures, and has pressure relieving properties, reducing risk of pressure-injury from lying still for long periods of time.

ABOUT THE EVENT

On Sunday 25th November, come rain or shine, we’ll be cycling 89.1 miles around Essex, through every town and village that Broomfield Hospital has a ward named after. And just in case that’s not enough, we’re doing it in our trauma uniform.

For those you know us personally, Dr Wren is a keen cyclist...Dr Hieatt, has just bought his first road bike. We'll keep you posted on the training rides.

No donation is too small, and every “share” on social media is greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions - louise_480@hotmail.com
