If ever there was a cause to swear about, it's this. Brain tumours change lives. They take away futures, plans and people we love. And that gives us something worth running for. Take that anger. That frustration. That determination. Run with it.

Story

Driven by love for Dad, we’re running 13km to help fund the future of brain cancer research and change the outcomes for families like ours. Why 13km? Only 13% of adults diagnosed with a primary high grade brain tumour survive for five years or longer.

In late January 2026, Dad’s health took a turn for the worse, and he was taken to hospital. While in Majors, he had a massive seizure and was intubated in the ICU in a coma for a couple of days. Fortunately, he woke up and eventually was moved to the neurology ward.

After 3 weeks and being treated for suspected encephalitis, along with a couple of CTs and MRIs, Dad was released back home (and very pleased to be, too).

At home, he continued to have various types of seizures, and after another MRI, we were told that he had multiple tumours in the brain. Since then, they have been confirmed high-grade and he’s gone downhill quickly each week, but we are always grateful to have still had the last 7 months with him here with us and his grandkids.

Watching someone you love go through something like this is incredibly difficult. It’s changed his life, and it’s changed ours too. There’s a lot of fear, frustration and helplessness that comes with knowing there’s something affecting someone you love that you can’t simply fix or take away.

He’s also feeling helpless, like he wants to do something about it. So, as his children, we wanted to do something for him, in his name, so he is doing his part too.

We’re all coming at this challenge from very different starting points. Shane is already a keen runner, Jamie has run before, and then there’s Ellen…who barely exercises at all!!

But we’ve decided to take this on together 💪 Dad is keen to be waiting for us at the finish line with his very own banner. We can’t wait to see his face ☺️ (although he’s receiving end of life care, so there’s a lot of hope in this post 🙏).

We’re doing it to turn some of that anger and helplessness into something positive. To raise money, raise awareness, and support The Brain Tumour Charity in funding vital research and providing support to people and families affected by brain tumours.

Most importantly, we’re doing it for Dad/Ray/Pops 💙

For the man we love.

For the family and friends standing beside him.

For everyone currently living with a brain tumour.

And for the hope that, one day, fewer families will have to go through what ours is going through.
