Money raised is for research into Clinical Nutrition at Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University. Patients who are unable to gain the nutrition they need from their gut need to have nutrition and fluid given via a vein (parenteral nutrition). This affects about 50 per million people, affecting babies to older adults and can be due to a variety causes. Unfortunately one of the complications of having parenteral nutrition is developing liver disease which can progress to cirrhosis. Colette Kirk, senior dietitian in Newcastle is studying the causes and impact of liver disease in patients needing to have parenteral nutrition.
