Climb for Freedom - Kilimanjaro 2024 with IJM UK · 23 June 2024 to 3 July 2024 ·

A passionate team of IJM champions are undertaking a challenging six-day climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro, via the Rongai route, all to raise vital funds to help stop slavery and violence across the world.

Story

For the past 2 years, I've been working with IJM - helping share incredible true stories of freedom and justice from around the world. One of the stories that's stuck with me the most is five-year-old Vin's (pseudonym).

Vin’s happy childhood in Kenya was turned upside down just days after his fifth birthday. Vin was walking back from school when a trusted neighbour invited him into his house. The man sexually assaulted him.

Vin's mum didn't know how they would ever get justice. She couldn’t afford the court costs and the perpetrator’s family began threatening her. Vin was struggling to sleep and talk. He became afraid of men, even his own brothers.

The situation seemed hopeless – until a friend introduced Vin’s mother to IJM. Thanks to the support of people like you, IJM immediately stepped in to provide urgent counselling for Vin and free legal representation.

Eventually, with IJM's support, Vin was able to face the man who’d abused him in court. Vin pointed at him and said, “It was you who hurt me.”

Vin’s brave and honest words helped obtain justice: the perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison. You can read more of his story here: https://www.ijmuk.org/stories/the-power-of-counselling-vins-story

Children like Vin are the reason I work for IJM, and the reason I'm heading to Kenya in June. I'm choosing to fundraise because I want to help IJM work with police and partners to bring more people to safety from violence and slavery, support survivors like Vin to heal and get the justice they deserve.

I'd be so grateful if you sponsored me - but more importantly, your donation will really make a difference to children like Vin. Thank you!
