Super Sofia’s Story
Campaign by Just4Children (RCN 1164473)
Just4Children are fundraising to provide Sofia with orthotics and private physiotherapy to give her greater independence.

Story

Sofia was born extremely prematurely at just 24 weeks alongside her identical twin sister, Sienna. Tragically, Sienna passed away just seven hours after they were born.

Sofia's fight for survival was only just beginning. She was critically ill and relied on maximum medical support for every aspect of her care. During those early days, she also developed E. coli sepsis, which is believed to have caused damage to her brain. As a result, Sofia was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Despite the challenges she has faced since birth, Sofia is the most incredible little girl. Over the past eight years, she has worked tirelessly to improve her strength and mobility. In December 2022, she underwent Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, and her parents, Mark and Clare, devoted themselves completely to her rehabilitation. Thanks to their unwavering dedication and Sofia's determination, she has surpassed everyone's expectations.

However, progress comes at a cost. Sofia requires regular specialist orthotics to relieve pressure sores, prevent skin damage, and support her mobility. These orthotics are incredibly expensive, but they have made a life-changing difference to the way she walks and moves.

As Sofia grows, especially as she approaches puberty, it is vital that she remains as strong and mobile as possible. Growth spurts can have a significant impact on children with cerebral palsy, and puberty is particularly known to cause a decline in mobility and function, especially for girls. Continuing her therapy and ensuring she has the equipment she needs will make all the difference.

Sofia meant the world to my brother, Gaz. Two years ago, we sadly lost him to a devastatingly short and aggressive form of cancer. In his memory, I've decided to take on a triathlon this September to raise funds to support Sofia and help give her every opportunity to continue thriving.

With just seven weeks to train, and having only recently started running again, this is going to be a huge challenge for me—but it's nothing compared to the challenges Sofia faces every single day.

If you're able to support us, no matter how big or small the donation, it would mean the world to our family. Thank you for helping us honour Gaz's memory while supporting an extraordinary little girl with an extraordinary determination to keep moving forward.
