Story
In October 2024, the world lost Dr. Paul Lowe – a deeply respected figure in global photojournalism and visual education. Paul was a pioneering photojournalist whose work documenting major global events – from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the genocide in Rwanda and the siege of Sarajevo – shaped how the world saw conflict, suffering, and survival. As a professor and mentor, he opened doors for hundreds of young journalists from underrepresented and post-conflict regions, leaving an enduring legacy in both visual storytelling and education.
He was also a dedicated endurance athlete – a cyclist, ultra-marathoner, and triathlete – who inspired those around him to find balance and strength through movement, community, and nature. The Paul Lowe Challenge is a global cycling initiative combining these two passions, journalism and sport, transforming grief into purpose. It mobilizes riders, supporters, and donors worldwide to raise funds for journalism scholarships for students from the majority world.
Your donation will go directly to the non-profit VII Foundation (https://theviifoundation.org/), a cause dear to my heart, founded by two great photojournalists friends - Gary Knight and Ron Haviv - from the Bosnian war days back in the early 90's. VII is dedicated to the highest ideals of journalism, both in reportage and tuition. To date, VII has taught, mentored and trained over 1200 students from over 100 countries in 10 languages. Paul played a fundamental role in VII's evolution for many years and was a greatly loved teacher and mentor. Your donation - large or small - is greatly appreciated. And please wish me luck, it's a big ride.
