Story

In April I’ll be running my first marathon - in memory of my parents. Both were taken far too soon by cancer, at the ages of 59 and 63, and both died within months of diagnosis.

They were everything you could want in a Mum and Dad. Kind-hearted and loving, a guiding light, and a daily inspiration to me and my brothers.

I’m Ali and I’m raising money for the Martlets, whose support and care was invaluable, and made the final weeks of my Mum’s life as special as possible. Such was her condition, it was a very timely call from the Martlets telling us they had a space available at their hospice. Their specialist end-of-life care ensured she was as comfortable as could be - and take the pressure off my family and I - so gave us a precious last few weeks with her.

It is hard to capture in words what a huge difference they made to her, and us, in such a dark and stressful time.

Running has been an important outlet for me since losing my Mum, and has helped me to cope with the grief and added anxieties of life. Training for a full marathon is a whole different ball game to anything I’ve run before - I’m honoured that the Martlets have offered me a place in London, a very special opportunity to give something back in my parent’s memory.

Martlets is a local charity that supports 3,000 people every year affected by terminal illness in and around Brighton & Hove. Their care is free thanks to the support of local people, businesses, and trusts. An NHS grant covers a portion of their costs, but they rely on the community to fund most of their vital services.

Any donation, no matter how big or small, will be really appreciated and help the Martlets in their vital work. Thank you for reading x
