Alastair, Roger & Alex: L’Eroica for Dementia Adventure

Alastair Shanks is raising money for Dementia Adventure

L'Eroica - Gaiole in Chianti · 3 October 2026

This page brings together fundraising activity from across the Right at Home network in support of Dementia Adventure.

Story

The Mission

This October, three "heroes" — Alastair, Roger, and Alex—are heading to the dust and hills of Tuscany to take on L’Eroica. This isn't your average bike ride. To honour the "Golden Age" of cycling, we’ll be riding vintage pre-1987 steel bikes, wearing wool jerseys, and tackling 210km of steep, unpaved "white roads" of Gaiole in Chianti.

No carbon fibre, no lycra — just old-fashioned sweat (and probably a bit of Tuscan dust).

Why Dementia Adventure?

We are taking on this physical challenge to support Dementia Adventure, a charity that believes life doesn't end with a diagnosis. They help people living with dementia get outdoors, experience the wellbeing benefits of nature, and enjoy a sense of adventure.

Dementia can make a person's world feel very small. This charity helps blow the doors wide open again through supported holidays and outdoor activities.

The Challenge

The Bikes: Vintage steel frames with down-tube shifters, no clip in pedals, no disc brakes.

The Route: Long miles (210.9 km), thousands of meters of climbing (3,878 m) and treacherous gravel descents.

The Goal: To raise £2,000 to help more families access the life-changing support Dementia Adventure provides.

Every pound you donate will go directly to ensuring that a diagnosis of dementia doesn’t mean the end of adventure. Whether it’s the price of a coffee or a celebratory bottle of Chianti, your support means the world to us and the families supported by the charity.

Grazie mille!
