Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition in which there is an increased tendency for the blood to clot. The condition can cause strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary emboli and DVTs. In pregnancy, APS is a leading cause of recurrent miscarriage and stillbirth.

Story

One day, our whole families lives got turned upside down. The hardest and scariest year of my sisters life began; and thats just the beginning.

After suffering two miscarriages, some blood tests were run and at 5 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with a rare blood clotting syndrome called APS - a chronic illness we had never heard of until that day. She was told not only did she have APS, but that she was triple positive for it with sky high numbers making her at a much higher risk to have a serious blood clot or stroke.

She was then told her chances of being able to carry their baby to a viable birth was 20% even if with injections twice a day with blood thinners and lots of other medication too. This was because of her being the highest risk profile and studies showing that triple positive patients dont respond well to the treatment.

Once they saw the heartbeat they knew there ultimately was no choice but to try and survive each day and pray for a total miracle.

Words can’t describe how horrific the last year has been, the pain and mental challenges she has endured together with her husband, have taken a huge toll on her mental and physical health.

But they made it, Miracle Max has been born and he fought every day, as did my sister. The road ahead for her to manage and treat the APS is still so scary and will mean huge changes to her and her family’s life but for now she is focusing on the win that they got their miracle son.

I want to raise vital funds and awareness so we can improve and save the lives of people with APS. Please donate to help my sister, and others suffering daily due to APS. She is truly an inspiration to me.
