Story
As most of you now know, dad was diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease in 2018. For such a fit and active man, the progressive loss of his mobility and independence was devastating for him and us as a family. Despite this, he never lost his smile, his sense of humour, his love of sport and his passion for supporting anyone wishing to compete in sport at any level.
In addition, he treasured time spent with the “Singing for the Brain” group run by the Alzheimer’s Society. It is amazing to see how music can transform the life of a sufferer and provide a light in dark times.
We as a family, along with some willing (!!) volunteers are running the Belfast Marathon as two relay teams to raise some much needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of our dad and his love of sport. We know he would have loved to witness this attempt in person, and no doubt would have had some tips on form for us all.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever.
Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
