Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page. We have entered the 2023 Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run in aid of the Huntington’s Disease Association (HDA)

Huntington’s disease is a hereditary illness caused by a faulty gene in your DNA - the biological ‘instructions’ you inherit which tell your cells what to do. If you have Huntington’s, it affects your body’s nervous system – the network of nerve tissues in the brain and spinal cord that co-ordinate your body’s activities. Although there is, as yet, no cure, you can learn to manage symptoms more effectively to improve your quality of life although the disease and symptoms progressively worsen over time and will result in full time care being required.

Symptoms of Huntingtons disease are:-

Movement (movements may happen that you don’t expect, while doing what you do want to do becomes more difficult)

Cognition (difficulties with planning and thinking)

Behaviour (changes in behaviour and personality)

The Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run is a very long-running motoring event, originally begun by the Standard-Triumph motor company in the 1960s. Vehicles that can be used are Standard-Triumph motor cars produced up until 1984 when the Triumph name ceased to be used on new motor cars. The event has been held almost every 2 years ever since (barring oil crises and pandemics..) and involves driving 2000 miles NON-STOP in just 48 hours. That's an AVERAGE speed of just over 40mph, so you can see how limited any stops have to be. Just two breakfast stops are scheduled - at John O'Groats, and at Land's End. To do this requires multiple drivers taking rotating shifts, the one not driving doing the navigating and trying to catch the odd bit of sleep in the passenger seat. This year, the event is to be held over 48 hours from Friday 6th October to Sunday 8th October 2023. The route starts at Knebworth, driving overnight to John O'Groats, then day and night to Land's End, and finally back to Knebworth for a well-earned rest.

Our team of drivers will be myself (Andy Cook), and Glynn Davis. We consider ourselves seasoned amateur mechanics who maintain our own cars and have successfully completed the event before. Both Glynn and Andy have entered the event several times previously, this being Andy's 9th entry and Glynn's 5th.

This year we are using Andy's 1971 Triumph GT6 which has entered the event 3 times before successfully completing 2 events in 2006 and 2008 but being defeated in Scotland by a large Stag which ran out in front of the car in 2010, although avoiding a collision with the Deer the car suspension was damaged and had to retire at John O'Groats. Having entered in 4 seater Triumphs with up to 3 drivers in the following years it's time to return to using the GT6 again after a 12 year break.

The 2023 RBRR will be the 28th in the series, and is one of the longest running single-make car events in the world. Around 135 old Triumph cars are on the entry list, each with crews of 2-4 drivers, and the vast majority of these are self-maintained, with many having been restored from heaps of rust, personally by their owners. The youngest cars taking part are now 39 years old, the oldest being 84 years old, and our car is 52 years old, so 2000 miles non-stop in 48 hours is a fairly strenuous test of reliability for these old machines.

Since 1990 the event has been run for charity, and has raised over £800,000 for various UK charities - in 2021 the event raised £102,000 for Motor Neurone Disease Association. We would be very grateful if this year we can raise a similar amount for the Huntington’s Disease Association via Just Giving.

All costs relating to the event (e.g. fuel, food, entry fees, car preparation and maintenance costs) are privately funded by the entrants - we will not take a single penny of any of the donations. Just Giving will never sell your details or send unwanted emails, and once you donate they’ll send your money directly to the charity.

Just giving may ask for a tip when you donate, however, if you set a custom ammount for a tip to zero then you can ignore this. I;d recoomend that TBH as they take a percentage anyway.

Please wish us luck - and thanks for your support!

Also if you want to cheer our team and the other Triumphs on then I've included a table with the control stops in the photos, just click on the view gallery button. I also hope to publish regular updates on the ay round using my blog page https://cook1e.blogspot.com/
