On 3rd September 2026 at 10am, Drew, a resident at Fleet Valley Care Home in Gatehouse of Fleet, is fundraising for Guide Dogs. He has been inspired after meeting Guide Dogs volunteers and their guide dog puppies during their visits to the care home.

Drew has been trying to build up the strength in his legs to complete a walk to the local SPAR shop. Volunteers and dogs from the Dumfries and Galloway Branch of Guide Dogs will be there on the day to walk with him and show their support.

Drew said: “When I arrived at Fleet Valley, I was immobile. Thanks to the staff’s dedication and support, I can now walk with a mobility device. I love dogs and Malteser chocolates. I am going to walk to the local SPAR to buy my Maltesters. If anyone would like to donate to Guide Dogs, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives.

Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams.
