This Shamrock Marathon Weekend, I am running to honor the man who was my brother-in-law, my mentor, a dear friend, and a formative leader in my Navy career: Captain John "Bag" Hefti, USN (ret.).

Bag lived by the motto: "Play Hard, Have Fun, Same Team."

Four years ago, we lost Bag tragically in a car accident. Being at the scene that day is something I carry with me, and running this race is my way of transforming that profound grief into powerful action, ensuring his vibrant, selfless legacy continues.

My Personal Journey

Recently, I faced a serious health challenge, undergoing brain surgery just five months ago to treat Moyamoya Disease, a rare vascular disease of the brain. Taking on a marathon so soon is no accident; I planned this challenge. I needed a significant, positive goal to focus on during my recovery, and what could be more motivating than running to honor John's legacy?

This marathon is my way of embodying Bag’s spirit—his resilience, his commitment, and his belief in always stepping up for the team. I am putting every step toward helping others and celebrating the life of a man who made such a difference in mine.

John "Bag" Hefti was a decorated Naval Aviator and TOPGUN grad, but his ultimate passion was coaching. He believed the field was the best classroom, where kids learned critical life skills like leadership, teamwork, and integrity.

Bag's Buddies ensures his positive impact lives on in Hampton Roads through two core missions:

1. Scholarships: Awarding the Captain John "Bag" Hefti Memorial Scholarship to scholar-athletes who embody John's commitment to excellence and selfless service.

2. Universal Access: Eliminating financial and infrastructure barriers to give every child the gear, facility access, and opportunity to experience the vital lessons of being on a team.
