Story
On Sunday 14th September, I'm taking part in Velindre Cancer Charity's beloved Castle 2 Castle fun run in memory of my son Ethan.
This is one of South Wales’ most cherished running events—a scenic 10.5-mile journey between two of the region’s most iconic landmarks, Caerphilly Castle and Cardiff Castle. .
This route will be a very personal one for me as it will hold so many memories of being with Ethan. We start at Caerphilly Castle, where 3 years ago, I stood bursting with pride as Ethan won the Caerphilly 2k, only months before his diagnosis. We will then head off through Castle View where his memorial bench sits overlooking the lake and where we spent so much of his childhood playing.
On to the Taff Trail to Castle Coch which holds so many memories of bike rides with friends and forest adventures.
As we head into the Cardiff leg of the run I will pass through Hailey Park and Llandaff fields where Ethan spent so many Sundays endurance training for Cardiff Archers.
Then finally the finish section at Blackweir Bridge will be close to where me and Ethan first raced together in 2015 at the Movember 5k in memory of my best friend and best man Michael who had lost his own battle with cancer only weeks before.
And then the whole journey in reverse is one we had walked together with his friend to raise funds for his football team.
It's just over 10 miles but will feel like more than double that as I fight through the emotions.
I will also be running in memory of my mother Margaret, who I lost to cancer 23 years ago, my uncle Brian who we lost earlier this year, my best friend Michael, and to support those who are currently battling this horrific and devastating illness.
Over the past 11 years, this beloved fun run has brought communities together.
So, please if you can, support Velindre Hospital in raising vital funds, helping the Hospital of Hope continue its incredible work in supporting patients and their families across Wales.
Thank you
