Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
For the past 15 years Jamie loved supporting young people at the beginning of their conservation journey in his role as Education and Training Manager at Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
Jamie was a uniquely talented naturalist, conservationist, educator and campaigner.
Jamie would never describe himself as a writer, but he had a unique talent with words.
In 2019 Jamie went for a 200-mile walk to raise money for 200 'Lost Words' books to give to 200 primary schools in Cumbria, and he beautifully captured this adventure, in his blog.
He often managed to be idiosyncratic, insightful, sometimes profound, and often spit-your-tea funny. Those same qualities made him a superb teacher, mentor, interviewer and compere for Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Kendal Mountain Festival, both of which will be immeasurably depleted by his loss.
Help us with setting up "Jamie's Fund" which will support young people at Cumbria Wildlife Trust. This could be with paying for books (of course!), training, equipment and any other items or training that are over and above what Cumbria Wildlife Trust can provide through other funding, but that are essential to each young person progressing to their next steps in their conservation career.
Jamie was diagnosed with a form of Pancreatic Cancer in November 2024. There was very little warning and no symptoms in the months before the diagnosis.
In mid December 2024 Jamie underwent one of the biggest operations a human can have, the Whipple procedure.
There were risks but Jamie bravely went for it, survived it and battled with incredible humility through the recovery.
By late January Jamie was back on the fells (I was terrified but so happy) and started chemotherapy.
It was a new challenge, but as from the beginning Jamie was determined to win this fight with the most positive attitude you could only imagine.
If one could cure Cancer with a positive mental attitude, Jamie should've won this battle! His mental strength was extraordinary.
In March 2025 Jamie got an infection which lead to hospitalisation. After several tests and scans Jamie was told that the Cancer was back and had spread.
Jamie returned home and chose not to tell anyone about it, instead taking me to our dear friends wedding on the 28th of March. In Jamie's style he did the most amazing Best Man speech and made me so emotional that I cried most of the wedding (making me an less then ideal guest).
The hope was that with chemo we could push the Cancer back or pause the decline.
Sadly in April, just after Jamie's 53rd Birthday, we were told that he had weeks, maybe a few months, left to live. Cancer had progressed at lightning speed and Jamie passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on the 24th of April 2025.
It was the most beautiful sunny day, filled with bird song when our beloved, funny, warm, loving Jamie fell asleep.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. It's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thank you for your generosity and supporting a new generation of conservationists. As one of the most nature depleted countries in Europe the UK needs them so much.
