Becka’s English Channel Relay Swim

English Channel relay swim · 12 June 2023
Hi, for anyone that doesn't know me, my name is Becka. Myself, along with 3 other ladies, have decided to take on the hardest challenge of our lives in a few months time. I'm doing this challenge in order to raise money for a local animal charity, Jacksons Animal Rescue.
So what's the challenge?
In June this year I will be swimming the English Channel as part of a relay team. Myself, and the other three ladies in the team, will each swim for an hour at a time. There will be no wetsuits either! Just our swimmers, goggles and a hat. The water is chilly to say the least! The journey across could take roughly 20 hours to swim, but that all depends on the tide and weather conditions on the day. It’s a long time in the water dodging jelly fish and what ever else may come our way. It will be both physically and mentally challenging.
A bit about me…
Ive always loved being in the water and from a very young age my parents got me into swimming. They have always been very supportive of my passion to swim and I have them to thank for being where I am with this sport today. I grew up competing for my local town Winsford, Cheshire and I’ve spent a lot of time in the water over the years (but I'm still waiting to grow a mermaids tail!)
In 2018 a few friends encouraged me to try open water swimming as upto this point I had always been in indoor swimming pools. So in April 2018, before I even owned my first wetsuit, I decided to brave Hatchmere Lake in Delamere. It was freezing! But for some strange reason I found it great fun, just a very cold kind of fun. From that point on I kept this up most weeks and would look forward to the summer months where the cold water was a much warmer. Enjoying being out in the open water led me to compete in open water swimming races along with night races in a diving quarry.
A bit about the charity I'm raising money for:
Jacksons Animal Rescue is based in Mold, North Wales. It rescues and rehomes domestic animals as well as providing rehabilitation and release for injured wildlife. I have always been an animal lover and knowing that this challenge will enable me to raise funds to help these sick, injured and homeless animals will encourage me to push through the gruelling training and the challenge itself. I will aim to post my journey for this challenge, from my training to the big event, for those wanting to follow.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this page and to everyone who is able to donate.
