Bertie Welch is raising money for The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity

Hiking coast to coast · 8 September 2025

Meadowbank is Bedford Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, situated in the Trust’s dedicated Women and Children’s Dept. in the Cygnet Wing. The Neonatal Unit is a Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit caring for premature, unwell new-born babies and their families.

Story

At the start of the year, our daughter was born prematurely after an emergency caesarean and immediately taken to the Meadowbank Unit at Bedford Hospital as she was struggling to breathe on her own. She spent the first few days of her life in the NICU before another couple of weeks on the unit building up her strength to be discharged. Throughout that time we were blown away by the incredible care and attention she received from all the staff at the Meadowbank Unit, as well as the amazing support they gave to two very scared and anxious new parents. Since being discharged, she's gone from strength to strength and you wouldn't know looking at her how rough a start she had.

To give something back and raise money for the unit, I've set myself the challenge of completing the Hadrian's Wall national trail in 4 days. This will see me walk 89 miles from Bowness-on-Solway to Tynemouth Castle, covering 21 miles a day for the first 3 days and 26 on the 4th day.

To help me on my trek, please donate anything you can to help support the incredible work they do and to help other families with premature or unwell new-born babies.
